A Support Animal does not get that, because it is not trained to perform a task. We say this plainly so you plan a trip on the real rules and not on the 2020 ones. If you truly need cabin access, the honest answer is a Service Dog, not a Support Animal.

Not as a right. Since the Department of Transportation rule took effect in early 2021, an airline may treat a Support Animal as a pet. That means a carrier, a pet fee and the airline's size limits. Check the airline's current pet policy before you book. Only a trained Service Dog keeps the cabin access a Support Animal once had.

No. The change was about air travel only. Your home right under the federal Fair Housing Act stayed exactly the same. A Support Animal is still an assistance animal in housing, with no pet fee and no breed or size ban, when you provide a letter from a Licensed Clinical Doctor.

For housing, a letter is generally honored for one year from its date. We recommend a current letter, valid for 365 days, so a landlord sees a recent and signed document. For air travel, no letter restores the old cabin access, because that access ended with the rule, not with your paperwork.
